Price Value & Trend Of Malaysia Parliament Coin Versus Coins From Malaya and Malaya & British Borneo Era

Posted by slang on August 27, 2010

In earlier articles, we have seen what are the low mintage Malaysia parliament house series definitive coins. To a large extent, the lower the mintage, the higher the value (on the proviso there is a great demand for these)

We have also describe the “extra dot” on the Parliament House series coin which is relatively very much more expensive than the usual parliament coin.

Again for those unfamiliar, please note that an additional good coin collecting hint is to be alerted to those Parliament house series coin WITHOUT the mint mark “C.G”. In Steven Tan’s catalogue, it reads ” Malaysia 1967-1988 Parliament House Series definitive coins 1 cent to 50 cents exist with “G.C”. Mint mark omitted varieties worth about 5 to 20 times of normal price

Just in case you do not know the placement of the mint mark, see below picture ( red circle)

Ten(10) Cents Parliament coin 1973 WITHOUT mint mark "G.C."

Another interesting aspect is the fast price trend increase in the Parliament house series definitive coin particularly the 20 cents and 50 cents from 1967 to 1988 compared to the silver MALAYA coins ( King George VI’s era). The Parliament House series definitive coins are made mainly of copper nickel whilst the Malaya coins were mainly of silver content yet the prices of Malaya silver coin are not really showing any marked changes in prices.

Perhaps, one logical answer might be as the Malaya coins were made of silver content, hence many people tend to hoard or collect them whereas the Parliament series definites coins were of copper nickel which were dumped or used without any thought of preserving them in high grade condition! On hindsight, I should have changed/buy from banks the uncirculated Parliament definitive series coins.

Any one have other comments ?

While surfing the internet for interesting articles and blog on coins and banknotes, I found one blog on British Trade Dollar silver coins  http://britishtradedollar.blogspot.com which I find to be very interesting and very useful for those collectors who are beginners or advanced collectors of the crown size BTD silver coins.

This site is a specialized coin site on british trade dollars coin written by a very passionate coin collector of the British trade dollar coins.

Some of the noteworthy articles in this specialized BTD coin site are:

  • The very clear illustrated photograph of the various BTD coins year by year;

  • What I find very interesting is the way the author demonstrate how to differentiate BTD coin from the counterfeit even with video so that readers can even actually  “hear” the difference between a real BTD and a fake/counterfeit BTD;
  • There is article on the author personal experiences/early memory when collecting the BTD coins and places to shop for coins in Ipoh
