This is a TWO part article on the modern Malaysian coins. This article looks at the Malaysian coins issued during the period of 1967-1988
Malaysia first issue coins comprising 5 denominations namely 1 cent copper, with the 5,10,20 and 50 cents inCupro nickel.
The features of the first Malaysia coins are as follows:
- On the obverse of the coin featured the Parliament House of Malaysia and a crescent moon and star representing Malaysia’s Concept of Parliamentary Democracy and Islam as the National Religion.
- On the reverse is the hisbuscus, the national flower, with the word ‘MALAYSIA” and the year of mintig.
- These coins were designed by Geoffrey Colley.
For coin collectors who aim for future high coin investment value , the suggestion is to consider buying some of the following low mintage coins at very high grade condition(they are relatively not so expensive due to the “young” age):
For the 1 Cent (1967-1988) family:
- In the 1 cent Malaysia copper coins ( 1967-1973), we have an outstanding 1970 one (1) cent mintage of 2.535 million coins which is the lowest in this family hence fetching very much higher value than the others from 1967-1973. Latest 2008 price catologue showed a unc 1970 coin fetch # Ringgit $50 or # USD15 and BU #Ringgit 80 or #USD 23
- Next, in the 1 cent Malaysia Copper-Clad Steel ( 1973-1988), we have those 1973 to 1988 with many millions rendering it very inexpensive to buy such coins. [ Note that there is this 1 cent 1976 BRONZE coin instead of the usual copper clad type]
For the 5 cents (1967-1988) family of coins:-
- Like the 1 cent which per date has millions of units being struck, the 5 cents is similar as the mintage are also very high with 20 millions or more per date.
For the 10 cents(1967-1988) family of coins:
- In the 10 cent Malaysia Copper Nickel, we have a very low mintage of the 1971 10 cent, mintage of 32,236 (refer earlier article on this) and the rest from 1967 to 1988 again have millions of mintage of coins per date
For the 20 cents(1967-1988) family of coins:
- For the 20 cent copper nickel series (1967-1988), the 1970 has only a mintage of 1.05 m but surprisingly not fetching good value for it
For the 50 cents (1967-1988) family of coins:
- However for the 50 cent copper nickel(1967-1988), we have the 1969 which has a mintage of 2 million which for unc condition able to fetch Ringgit 250 or USD 70 and BU condition of Ringgit 450 or USD120.
- Another point to note about the 50 cents, is for the year 1967 to 1969, we can find milled edge instead of the usual security edge type. Those will milled edge will cost hundreds of time more than the usual security edge.

As some of the aforesaid coins are still being circulated around, with alertness and knowledge, perhaps we are lucky to obtain them. Anyway, good luck in your hunting!
