Mintmark H on Malaysia Coins Like Malaya & British Borneo, Straits Settlements, Sarawak And British North Borneo

Sometimes, collectors might find coins of Straits Settlements for example   one-dollar coin King Edward VII 1907H and wanting to know where to locate this so-called mintmark H and what this mintmark H stands for.

Meaning of mintmark “H”

  • Mintmark H= Ralph Heaton & Sons, Birmingham

H which stands for Ralph Heaton & Sons, Birmingham was originally a private mint located in Birmingham. Later #1879 it became known as The Mint, Birmingham. It sometimes act as sub-contractor of the Royal Mint, London. Also, it is the regular supplier of coin blanks/planchet of the correct size and weight to the Royal Mint’s Liantrisant works.

-         The H mintmark appears on the reverse below the word CENTS

©  On coins of Sarawak

-         Always on the reverse above the date but below the knot of the ribbon on copper and cupro nickel coins and on the silver coins the H is below the knotted rope.

(d) On coins of British North Borneo

-         Appears below the shield on the Half Cent and on the other denominations it is below the Company’s coat of arms on the obverse.
