Below are two British North Borneo coins being sold at mudah.com.my which were graded GEF ( good extremely fine).

British North Borneo Coin being graded as GOOD EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION
The importance of understanding a little bit of grading is extremely importance in your purchase of coins. Alternatively you might go to a reputable and honest coin dealer to buy coins, nevertheless there is still a need to know a little bit of coin grading. It is therefore important to (a) attend to more coins auctions / fairs /shows OR view online similar coins to understand grading OR ask friends to explain or help so as to understand coin grading.
Anyone would want to guess what should be the grade condition of the aforesaid coins? My two cents worth:AVF or VF? - at the cross of arms, the bodies and ship etc are not cleared at all-like the people are being almost being stripped of everything ( haha! – I understand they are depicting naked tribal people but not almost nude tribal people)

Ironically, in coin grading term, good condition coin denotes the following:
- a coin that has a minimum visible condition;
- the coin is so worn that most of the details are almost flat.Part of the lettering may be illegible
- it may have fine scratches or minor edge nicks
- in parts, it may be corroded, stained or have patina on it.
- it is not a desirable condition to collect and should be used as a “filler” for coin that are difficult to come
Let’s look at the obverse of this 5 cent 1874H Queen Victoria, the details of the bust is barely visible but the lettering is still visible.

Interestingly though, this 5 cent 1874H is actually quite a scarce coin which has a mintage of 60,000 and also formed one of the early date of the 5 cent Queen Victoria family.( first 5 cent coin started from 1871 with mintage of 60,000; 1873(mintage:60,000) and then this 1874H coin. For those Straits Settlements coins collectors perhaps, this coin can acts as filler to their collections until they can find one with better condition.

Coin Pictorial Grading:
Very fine(VF) condition in a coin normally denotes:
- worn over, but obvious evidence of limited circulation
- high spots worn but details remains.
- traces of mint lustre may linger amongst the letters of the inscription.
The below picture shows the details on the tiara and the pearls on the bun are still discernable. Some details of the hairlines can still be seen. The coin looks definitely worn over with limited circulation ( click on the picture for clearer view)
