Khmer Republic Bank Notes

Prince Sihanouk was toppled by a bloodless coup led by Lon Nol in March 1970. Sihanouk moved to Peking to head a government-in-exile. On October 9,1970, Cambodia became the Khmer Republic and Lon Nol its President.

Below are the first issue of bank notes of the Khmer Republic:

Above picture is the 100 Riels dated 1970. Blue, 2 oxen at right. 3 ceremonial women on back ( two versions)

This is the 500 Riels dated 1970 . M/c Farmer plowing with 2 oxen. Pagod at right,. doorway at left on back. French printing. There are five versions of signature for this particular 500 riels

The following are bank notes issued by Banque Nationale du Cambodge:

First issue 1955-1956 for 1 riel, 5 riels, 10 riels and 50 riels

For the second issue, we have the 1 riel, 20 riels,50 riels,100 riels and 500 riels

The picture showed the following:

  • 1 Riel dated 1956. Green on m/c unpt. Port of Pnom-Penh. Pagoda on back ( three versions of signature)
  • 50 Riels dated 1956. Blue and orange. Boats on water. Back blue and brown,w/Angkor Wat.(three versions)
  • 100 Riels dated 1957.Brown and green. Statue of Lokecvara at left. Long boat on back ( two versions of notes)
