What is Numismatics?

Posted by slang on September 28, 2007

This article seeks to explain who is a numismatist and the difference between a coin collector and numismatist.

Numismatics is the study and or collecting of currences, coins, paper money, tokens, medals, orders and decorations, and similar objects.A numismatist is one who has a comprehensive knowledge of numismatics.

A collector is not necessary a numismatist; a numismatist need not be a collector. A numismatist can liken be an archaeology associate, the curator of a national or institutional collection, a dealer or simply a serious student of numismatics.

Therefore, do not be at all surprised that a coin collector is seldom a numismatist.
